How to Use an Espresso Machine

Master your espresso machine with our step-by-step guide to pulling perfect shots and steaming milk.

Basic Espresso Workflow

1. Preheat

Turn on machine 15-30 minutes before use. Run water through group head.

2. Grind

Grind fresh beans immediately before brewing. Use fine espresso grind.

3. Dose

Add 18-20g of grounds to portafilter. Level with finger or distribution tool.

4. Tamp

Apply 30lbs of pressure evenly. Keep tamper level.

5. Extract

Lock portafilter, start extraction. Target 25-30 seconds for 36-40ml.

6. Steam

Purge steam wand, create microfoam for milk drinks.

Common Mistakes & Fixes

Old coffee

Use beans within 2-4 weeks of roast date

Wrong grind

Adjust finer if too fast, coarser if too slow

Uneven tamp

Keep wrist straight, apply even pressure

Cold machine

Preheat for 15-30 minutes minimum

Dirty machine

Clean daily, descale monthly
