Light vs Dark Roast Temperature

Do light and dark roasts use different roasting temperatures?

Yes, but the end temperature alone does not define the roast. Light roasts usually finish earlier with less development after first crack, while darker roasts continue longer into caramelization and sometimes toward second crack.

What to Check First

Track time after first crack, not just final bean color.

Use smell, sound, and surface texture together.

Avoid pushing a small roaster too hot just to reach a dark color faster.
