How the Encore ESP dial splits into espresso (1-20) and filter (21-40) ranges
The Baratza Encore ESP dial runs from 1 to 40 but does not move in even steps. According to the Encore ESP user guide, settings 1-20 form the espresso range, where each step makes a small change to grind size. Settings 21-40 form the filter range, where each step makes a relatively large change. An Encore ESP espresso shot is therefore tuned one number at a time inside 1-20, while a one- or two-number move above 21 already shifts a filter brew noticeably. How to change the grind setting on the Encore ESP safely
Baratza describes Encore ESP adjustment as a turn of the hopper on its product page. Lower numbers are finer and higher numbers are coarser. The Encore ESP user guide warns that the grinder must be running or completely empty of beans whenever you adjust, to avoid damage.
