How Barista Express Impress automatic dosing works

Automatic dosing is the default mode on the Barista Express Impress and, per the BES876 instruction book, the one most owners will use. The grinder runs for a set time, you pull the assisted tamp lever, and the Dose Level Indicator shows whether the basket holds the ideal amount. The machine then adjusts the grind time for the next dose.

Two Auto-only tools correct a short dose without touching the learned time. 'A Bit More' adds grounds when the DOSE button flashes after tamping. Dose Top-up refills a basket that already holds coffee, for example after the portafilter was removed mid-grind and not reinserted within 5 seconds; Breville notes it can take 2 to 3 top-up cycles and does not change the set auto grind time.

How Barista Express Impress manual dose mode works

Manual dose mode on the Barista Express Impress is controlled by one dial. Press the MANUAL DOSE dial to switch modes; the ring around the dial and the MANUAL light illuminate. Rotate the dial clockwise for more grind time or counterclockwise for less, as described in the BES876 manual.

Manual mode on the Barista Express Impress switches off intelligent dosing. The manual's troubleshooting table lists "auto time not adjusting" and "dose level is not updating" as symptoms of being in Manual mode, with one fix: press the MANUAL DOSE dial to return to Auto.

When to use manual dose on the Barista Express Impress

• Low hopper on the Barista Express Impress: Breville's fix for "grinder does not grind all beans" is to refill the hopper or use Manual mode.
• Single-dosing weighed beans: a fixed manual grind time avoids the auto dose learning from a partial grind. This is an owner workflow, not a Breville instruction.
• Holding grind time constant while testing a new bean: Manual keeps one variable fixed. Switch back to Auto and reset the auto dose time once you settle on a grind.

How to reset the Barista Express Impress automatic dose time

Breville recommends resetting the Barista Express Impress auto dose time after a significant grind size change or an accidental double dose into the portafilter (BES876 manual, Reset Default Settings).

Do not confuse the auto dose reset with the Barista Express Impress extraction time reset, which uses FILTER, 1 CUP and 2 CUP held for 3 seconds.

Relearning the Barista Express Impress auto dose after changing beans or baskets

• New beans or a coarser grind: the Barista Express Impress manual expects an over dose. Before grinding, hold FILTER for 3 seconds to deduct 3 seconds from the auto dose.
• A finer grind: expect an under dose; press DOSE for 'A Bit More'. The new auto time is calculated after the next tamp and used for the dose after that.
• Wrong basket selected: a single basket in double filter mode gives a severe over dose; a double basket in single mode gives a severe under dose. Select the correct filter size, and after a double-in-single mix-up, reset the auto dose time.
