Barista Express Impress Grind Settings
Start at 16 of 25 and let the Impress auto dose catch up.
To clean the Breville Barista Express Impress (BES876) tamping system, remove the tamp cover, brush the tamp face and chute, hold the tamp lever down to brush around the lowered tamp, then release it slowly and refit the cover. The whole job is dry, needs only the supplied brush, and is separate from descaling.
The Barista Express Impress tamping system is the assisted tamp lever, the tamp face it drives, the tamping chute above the grinding cradle, and the removable tamp cover that shrouds them. Breville's BES876 instruction book gives the tamp system its own cleaning section, "Cleaning the Tamp System", apart from burr cleaning, the clean cycle and descaling.
Tamp system cleaning removes coffee grinds and dust, not scale or coffee oil. If you are working on shot time or dose instead, see the parent Barista Express Impress grind settings guide. This guide is compiled from Breville's documentation, not hands-on testing.
These five steps follow the Barista Express Impress manual's tamp system procedure.
Take off the removable tamp cover (Breville also calls it the shroud) on the Barista Express Impress to expose the tamp face and the tamping chute.
Tip: Start with the tamp lever in the up home position and no portafilter in the cradle.
Use the cleaning brush to clear dust and grinds from the tamp face, the chute and the grinding cradle.
Tip: Work dry. Loose grounds brush out more easily than wet paste.
Hold the assisted tamp lever down so the tamp face drops, then brush off grind residue in and around the tamp.
Tip: Only the brush goes into the tamp area. Keep fingers out of the tamping chute.
Let the lever rise back to the home position slowly, making sure the brush is clear of the tamp system first.
Tip: A lever left below home can block the chute and stop the grinder.
Replace the tamp cover. The Barista Express Impress is then ready to dose and tamp again.
Tip: Tamp the next dose slowly for a smoother puck surface.
The BES876 troubleshooting table ties several tamp lever and puck symptoms to grinds in the tamp mechanism. Not every symptom is a cleaning problem, so check the cause column first.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Tamp lever very hard to push | Coffee build-up in the tamp mechanism, or a severe over dose | Remove the tamp cover and brush the mechanism. For an over dose, trim with the Razor tool and check the filter size. |
| Puck surface not flat and smooth | Coffee grinds stuck on the tamp face | Remove the tamp cover and brush the tamp face clean. |
| Loose grounds on top of the puck | Grinds caught on the tamp, or tamping too quickly | Push the tamp lever a second time, and push it down more slowly. |
| Grinder stops or will not start | Lever too low, so the tamp blocks the chute; or coffee build-up stops the portafilter seating | Raise the lever fully to home. Brush the grinding cradle clean. |
| Machine beeps 3 times and pauses the dose | Tamp lever not at the home position | Return the lever to the up position and press DOSE to continue. |
Barista Express Impress tamp system cleaning only brushes the tamp side. When grinds block the path between the conical burrs and the grinder outlet, the manual's burr cleaning and "Advanced Cleaning for the Conical Burr Grinder" procedures apply instead: empty the hopper, remove the top burr, and, for a blockage, remove the lower burr and grind fan to clear the exit chute. Both burr procedures also end with removing the tamp cover and brushing the chute, then resetting the grind size to 16. Handle the burrs carefully; Breville warns they are extremely sharp. For broader machine care, see the espresso machine cleaning guide.
Remove the tamp cover, brush the tamp face, chute and cradle, then hold the tamp lever down and brush around the lowered tamp. Release the lever slowly with the brush clear, and refit the cover. This is the procedure in Breville's BES876 manual.
Breville's troubleshooting lists two causes for a stiff Barista Express Impress tamp lever: a severe over dose in the basket, and coffee build-up in the tamp mechanism. Trim an over dose with the Razor tool; clean build-up by removing the tamp cover and brushing the mechanism.
No. The BES876 manual says not to clean any parts or accessories in the dishwasher and not to use abrasive cleansers or pads. The tamp system itself is cleaned dry with the brush.
No. Tamp system cleaning removes coffee grounds from the assisted tamp. Descaling removes mineral scale from the water path, and the clean cycle with a cleaning tablet flushes the group head. Each is a separate procedure in the Barista Express Impress manual.
