Baratza Encore Broken Burr-Holder Tabs: How to Identify the Part

What the Baratza Encore ring burr holder is

The Baratza Encore ring burr holder is the plastic carrier that grips the upper, removable ring burr. The Encore Operations Manual labels its raised grips as the "Burr Alignment & Lifting Tabs": one tab carries a red indicator that lines up with the red mark on the grind adjustment ring, and the tabs are what you grip to lift the ring burr straight out for cleaning. Because the Encore grind setting depends on that alignment, a cracked or missing tab turns a simple cleaning job into a parts order.

Signs the Baratza Encore burr holder tabs are broken

• A Baratza Encore lifting tab is snapped off, cracked at its base, or missing its red indicator.
• The Encore ring burr no longer lifts out evenly, or sits loose and tilted in the holder.
• The Encore ring burr will not seat flush in the grind adjustment ring, so the hopper will not twist into place.
• Plastic fragments show up in the Encore grounds bin or around the center cone burr.

How to find your Baratza Encore model number

The Baratza Encore model and serial number are on the bottom of the grinder, according to the Encore manual. Unplug the grinder, empty the hopper and grounds bin, and tip it over to read the label. A model beginning ZCG485 or ZCG484 is the original Encore; ZCG495 is the Encore ESP; ZCG595 is the Encore ESP Pro. Baratza lists different holders for each, so the model code matters more than the name on the front.

Holder only or ring burr and holder for the Encore

Baratza states that its holder-only parts, including the Encore Ring Burr Holder SP0101174, do not include a ring burr, so you move your existing steel ring burr into the new holder. Choose the holder only when the Encore ring burr is undamaged. Choose the combined Ring Burr and Holder SP0100801 (original Encore) or ESP Ring Burr and Holder SP0102054 (Encore ESP) when the burr is also chipped, or when whatever broke the tabs may have damaged the burr's cutting edges.

What causes Baratza Encore burr holder tabs to break

Baratza's parts pages do not state a failure cause for the Encore burr holder. The Encore manual does warn that the grinder must be running or completely empty when the grind setting changes, to prevent damage, and its warranty excludes foreign objects such as stones and screws in the beans. Both point to the same habits for protecting a new Encore holder: adjust only with the motor running or the hopper empty, and pick through beans for debris.
