How to Calibrate a Baratza Encore Grinder

Does the Baratza Encore need calibration?

A Baratza Encore needs attention when its grind changes at the same setting number, when the hopper will not seat, or when coffee stops flowing. Whole Latte Love's Baratza recalibration guide says recalibration may help when a grinder will not go fine enough for espresso or produces too many fines at French press settings. What the Baratza Encore manual supports instead of a calibration screw

The current Baratza Encore Operations Manual (v4.3, December 2022) does not include a calibration-screw procedure. The Encore's user-serviceable alignment point is the removable ring burr: its red burr lifting tab must line up with the red indicator on the grind adjustment ring, and Baratza says those marks sit close to grind setting 30.

The Encore grind scale runs from very fine at setting 1 to very coarse at setting 40. Baratza warns that the Encore must be running or completely empty when the grind setting changes, because adjusting a loaded Encore risks damaging the grinder.

How to reseat the Baratza Encore ring burr, step by step

These Baratza Encore steps follow pages 7 and 8 of the Encore manual. No tools are needed.

1. 1. Empty and unplug the Encore

   Remove all beans from the hopper, grind the remaining beans through, then unplug the grinder before removing the hopper.

2. 2. Remove the hopper

   Rotate the hopper fully counterclockwise until the silver grind setting indicator lines up with the triangle near setting 40, then lift the hopper off.

3. 3. Turn the grind adjustment ring fully counterclockwise

   Use the grind adjustment tabs to turn the ring. The red indicator on the burr lifting tabs should line up with the red indicator on the grind adjustment ring.

4. 4. Lift out and inspect the ring burr

   Grip the burr lifting tabs and lift straight up. Keep track of the hopper gasket. Brush grounds off the ring burr and center cone burr; never wet the ring burr, because it will rust. Do not remove the wingnut on the center burr.

5. 5. Reinsert the ring burr with the red marks aligned

   Insert the ring burr with the red lifting tab aligned to the red indicator on the adjustment ring. Baratza says these red indicators should sit close to grind setting 30. Press until the burr is fully seated.

6. 6. Refit the hopper gasket and hopper

   Seat the gasket with its thicker side inside the plastic rim of the ring burr. Align the hopper indicator with the triangle near setting 40, push down, and rotate clockwise until it starts to click.

Checking Baratza Encore grind range after reseating

After reseating the Baratza Encore ring burr, plug the grinder in, start the motor, and only then move between settings. Grind a small dose at your usual number with the pulse button and brew your normal recipe. If the Encore is back to its previous behavior at that number, the problem was burr seating or buildup. Retailers have published Baratza Encore recalibration walkthroughs, including Seattle Coffee Gear's Encore re-calibration guide and Whole Latte Love's guide covering the Encore, Virtuoso and other Baratza models. Those retailer guides are not described in Baratza's current Encore manual, so confirm your Encore's version and contact Baratza before adjusting anything beyond the ring burr. When to contact Baratza support about an Encore

Contact Baratza when a clean, correctly seated Encore still grinds inconsistently, makes new noises, or will not reach settings it used to reach. The Encore manual lists support@baratza.com and baratza.com for troubleshooting. The US and Canadian limited warranty runs one year from purchase and covers defects in materials and workmanship; it excludes lack of cleaning, lack of proper adjustment, and foreign objects such as stones in the beans. Have proof of purchase and the serial number from the bottom of the grinder ready.
