Why a Baratza Encore grinds coarser after cleaning

The Baratza Encore sets grind size through the relationship between the removable ring burr, the grind adjustment ring and the hopper, which carries the grind setting indicator. Cleaning means taking all three apart. The Encore manual ties reassembly to fixed reference points: the adjustment ring turned fully counterclockwise, the red burr lifting tab aligned with the red indicator near setting 30, and the hopper started at the triangle near setting 40.

Miss any of those reference points and the number on the Encore hopper no longer describes the burr position you had before cleaning. A ring burr that is not pressed fully down, or a hopper gasket caught under it, is the other common cause. The manual also notes that a ring burr that is not fully seated can stop the hopper from twisting on, so resistance at the hopper is a strong clue.

How to reseat the Baratza Encore ring burr (burr holder) after cleaning

These Baratza Encore reassembly steps follow pages 7 and 8 of the Encore manual. No tools are needed, and the center burr wingnut stays in place.

1. Empty, unplug and remove the Encore hopper

Grind out any remaining beans, unplug the Encore, rotate the hopper fully counterclockwise to the triangle near setting 40 and lift it off.

2. Turn the Encore grind adjustment ring fully counterclockwise

Use the grind adjustment tabs. Lift the ring burr out straight up by its lifting tabs and keep the hopper gasket safe.

3. Clear grounds from the Encore burr seat

Brush grounds off the ring burr, the center cone burr and the seat the ring burr sits in. Keep the ring burr dry and leave the center burr wingnut in place.

4. Reinsert the Encore ring burr with the red marks aligned

Line the red burr lifting tab up with the red indicator on the adjustment ring, near setting 30, and press until the ring burr is fully seated.

5. Refit the Encore gasket and hopper

Place the gasket thicker side down inside the ring burr's plastic rim. Align the hopper indicator with the setting 40 triangle, push down and twist clockwise until it clicks.

Confirming the Baratza Encore grind is back to normal

Plug the Baratza Encore back in and start the motor before moving the hopper to your usual number. The manual says the Encore must be running or completely empty of beans whenever the grind setting changes, because partially ground beans can stay between the burrs.

When a correctly reassembled Baratza Encore still grinds coarse

A Baratza Encore that still grinds coarse after a careful reseat needs a different diagnosis. If little or no coffee reaches the grounds bin, the manual points to a clog from built-up oil or an overfilled bin and sends owners to baratza.com/troubleshooting.
