What the Baratza Encore M2 burr upgrade is

The standard Baratza Encore ships with the M3 conical burr, while the Virtuoso+ and the Encore ESP use the M2 burr. A complete Baratza Encore M2 upgrade uses two parts: the threaded M2 cone burr and the conical-grinder ring burr with holder. Retailer Eight Ounce Coffee notes that the M2 cone burr can technically run against the existing ring burr, but that Baratza recommends changing both burrs at the same time.

Standard Encore vs Encore ESP: which M2 burr fits

The standard Baratza Encore and the Encore ESP take different M2 cone burrs, and the two are not interchangeable. A standard Encore uses the threaded M2 burr (SP0101069) and the conical ring burr (SP0100801). The Encore ESP uses its own M2 cone burr (SP0102055); Java Exotic Imports' listing warns that the ESP burr will not work in a regular Encore or Virtuoso and suggests checking whether the burr's center hole is smooth (ESP) or threaded (standard). Baratza's ring burr listing likewise directs Encore ESP owners to separate parts.

What changes after a Baratza Encore M2 upgrade, and what does not

Published retailer descriptions of the Encore M2 upgrade point to four changes: Eight Ounce Coffee lists faster and quieter grinding, a more consistent grind size with less fines, and the need to re-dial grind size afterward. Prima Coffee adds greater clarity in the cup compared with the M3 burr.

The Encore M2 upgrade leaves the grinder's 1 to 40 grind scale, adjustment ring, motor and hopper untouched, as described in the Encore manual. A burr swap alone does not change how far or in what steps the standard Encore adjusts, so an M2-equipped standard Encore is not the same grinder as an Encore ESP.

Is the Baratza Encore M2 upgrade worth it, compared with replacing the grinder

The Baratza Encore M2 upgrade is worth it when the Encore motor and gearbox run normally, the grinder is mostly used for pour-over, drip or French press, and the stock burrs are due for replacement anyway. For roughly $52, the owner gets fresh cutting edges plus the burr geometry Baratza uses in the Virtuoso+ and Encore ESP.

Replacing the whole grinder makes more sense when espresso is the main goal, when the Encore has motor or gearbox faults, or when the adjustment steps themselves are the limitation. How to run your own before/after check on an M2-upgraded Encore

1. 1. Record the stock Encore baseline

   Before opening the grinder, write down your usual setting, dose, brew method, brew time and how the cup tastes. Keep a sealed portion of the same beans for the after comparison.

2. 2. Swap the cone burr and ring burr

   Follow Baratza's instructions for the M2 cone burr, and reinstall the ring burr with the red indicators aligned as the Encore manual describes.

3. 3. Purge and re-dial the upgraded Encore

   Grind a few grams to clear old grounds. Expect your old number to produce a different result; retailers note that owners need to re-dial grind size after the M2 swap.

4. 4. Compare the same beans and recipe

   Brew the saved beans with the same dose and water, adjusting only the grind setting until brew time matches the baseline. Then taste blind, with someone else pouring, and note clarity and bitterness.
