How to Remove Oat Milk Residue from a Milk Frother
Manual cleaning steps for dried oat milk film.
Find the milk a normal wash missed, one part at a time.
Part of our guide to removing oat milk residue from a milk frother. These checks were researched from Nespresso and Breville user manuals; always follow the manual for your own frother model.
A milk frother that smells after washing almost always has milk left in a part the wash did not reach. The usual places are under the silicone lid seal, inside the joint of a two-part whisk, in the hole at the centre of the jug and on the heating chamber. Unplug the frother, take every removable part off, wash each one separately with detergent and warm water, and dry everything before reassembling.
Milk frother odor comes from specific spots that a rinse with the lid on skips. Frother manuals name these spots in their cleaning steps.
| Frother part | What to check | Manual guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Lid silicone seal | Milk film in the groove the seal sits in, and on the seal's underside | Nespresso: remove the silicone seal from the lid |
| Two-part whisk | Milk trapped where the upper and lower whisk parts join | Nespresso: disassemble both parts of the whisk |
| Frothing disc | Film on the disc and its fittings | Breville: wash the frother attachment thoroughly in warm soapy water |
| Jug centre hole | Milk residue or debris in the hole at the jug's centre | Breville: keep the centre hole free of residue |
| Heating chamber | Dried milk on the chamber and sensor components | Breville: wipe with a damp cloth to remove milk residue |
Milk frother lid odor usually starts under the silicone seal, because foam rises into the lid and dries in the groove the seal covers. The Nespresso Barista Recipe Maker manual tells owners to remove the silicone seal from the lid before washing, and lists the jug lid and lid seal among the parts that can go in the dishwasher at a maximum of 70 °C (158 °F). Pull the seal off, look at the groove and the seal's underside for a yellowish film, wash both with detergent and warm water, and let them dry apart before pressing the seal back in. If your frother's seal is not designed to come off, check the manual rather than prying it loose.
A milk frother whisk that looks clean on the outside can still hold milk inside its joint. The Nespresso Barista Recipe Maker manual says to disassemble both parts of the whisk for optimal cleaning, separating them by gently turning the upper whisk part. For disc-style frothers, Breville's Milk Cafe BMF600 manual says to wash the frother attachment thoroughly in warm soapy water, and recommends hand washing the frothing discs to extend their life even though they are top-shelf dishwasher safe. Separate every piece of the whisk or disc and smell each one after washing; the piece that still smells is the one to rewash.
The milk frother jug's centre hole and heating chamber collect residue that a sponge wiped around the wall misses. Breville's Milk Cafe manual says to make sure there is no milk residue or foreign object in the hole at the centre of the jug, because it interrupts normal frothing, and to clean the inner heating chamber with a damp cloth so no milk residue or spillage remains on the key sensor components. The Breville manual also says to unplug the frother and let the jug and disc cool before rinsing.
A milk frother reassembled while damp can smell stale even when every part was washed. Nespresso's Barista Recipe Maker manual says to dry all device parts with a fresh, clean towel, cloth or paper before reassembling, and Breville's Milk Cafe manual says the underside of the jug must always be dry before it goes back on the power base. Leave the seal out of the lid and the whisk parts separated until they are fully dry, then reassemble.
If the smell comes from scorched milk rather than old residue, the burnt milk stuck to a stainless steel frother guide covers that problem.
A milk frother usually still smells after washing because milk is trapped in a part the wash did not reach: under the silicone lid seal, inside a two-part whisk, in the jug's centre hole or on the heating chamber. Parts that go back together while damp can also hold a stale smell.
On many jug frothers it does. The Nespresso Barista Recipe Maker manual tells owners to remove the silicone seal from the lid for cleaning, and lists the lid seal as dishwasher safe at a maximum of 70 °C (158 °F). Check your own model's manual before pulling a seal.
Only if the manual allows it. Nespresso allows the Barista Recipe Maker jug, lid, lid seal and whisk at up to 70 °C (158 °F) with all parts except the power base, and Breville allows the Milk Cafe jug lid on the top shelf only.
Avoid harsh products. Breville says alkaline or abrasive cleaning agents, steel wool and scouring pads can damage the Milk Cafe's surface, and Nespresso warns against abrasive material. Warm water and detergent on fully disassembled parts is the method both manuals give.
